Zeitgeist
Zeitgeist- defining the spirit or mood of a particular time period
Ex: More often than not my writing captures the zeitgeist of the early 2000’s suburban white kid experience. Like Dice-K Matsuzaka’s gyro ball in The Bigs 2 for the PS2, my examples are known to befuddle older readers, often leading them to scour circuitous internet rabbit holes for minute scraps of information written by anemic basement dwellers in abstruse blog posts. I write for those most privileged of cul de sac rats. For those of us who had nothing but time to get up to unsupervised shenanigans ranging from the mundane, to the ill-spirited, to the probably illegal. From “accidentally” double pantsing our friends in front of their crushes, to telling other children around the globe in Modern Warfare 2 lobbies to kill themselves, to bringing a camping stove into the woods behind our houses to melt down dabs and fill up shoddy cartridges to sell off to novice grass smokers in high school. You in the Huf socks and Osiris sneakers with the Bieber bowl cut, you know what I’m talking about. From ogling the dildos in the back of a Spencer’s gifts, to raiding our parents’ liquor cabinets for a cheap bottle of Korbel Champagne and half a Martini & Rossi sweet vermouth so we could catch a sweet buzz before watching Hot Tub Time Machine in theaters. These debaucheries were rites of passage for my generation.
