VOLUME 1: ~Fin~ Ephemeral, Pernicious, Agog
NOTE: This is the final post that will contain words found in The Filthy Easy Guide to Vocab: Volume 1. If you enjoyed any of the posts so far, consider buying a copy of the book for your coffee table, or for that stack of books and newspapers that sits largely untouched in your bathroom. All posts moving forward will include new, never before seen passages and stories. Well, the stuff so far has mostly been unseen, because only about ten of you have the book, but you get the point.
Ephemeral- very short-lived
Ex: He was no fool, he knew his relationship with the Victoria’s Secret angel was bound to be ephemeral. Up until that point in his life, the only dating success he had found was a string of meaningless hook ups with town carnival carneys who would trade sexual favors for the high-tier prizes like stuffed Mario and Luigi dolls. He recalled picking bits of caramel apple out of his teeth on those fervent summer nights in the shed next to the tilt-o-whirl.
Pernicious- capable of causing harm, usually in a subtle way
Ex: They always warn you about the pernicious effects of eating GMO fruit that has been treated with pesticides. If you ask me, I’d much rather incur the slight risk of growing a third eye than ever have to eat a grape that doesn’t taste like cotton candy or blue raspberry hubba bubba tape ever again. Not to mention, most of the organic fruit in stores is probably coming from farmers who mix in their own fecal matter with their compost in order to feel more connected to their crops.
Agog- showing eager interest, anticipation
Ex: Each year the kids were agog for the start of the scholastic book fair, where they rushed to pick up the latest entry in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. The kids were a little perplexed as to the direction the series’ author, Jeff Kinney, was taking with this year’s release: Rodrick Gets Hit with a Statutory Charge, which is Super Annoying for Greg as he Struggles to Work Overtime to Cover the Increased Cost for Rowley’s Diabetes Medication.
