Maelstrom- a powerful whirlpool in a body of water
Ex: Me and the boys used to think that by running around in circles in the pool we could make a maelstrom. We also thought that said maelstrom would impress the ladies laying out on sunbeds outside the pool. Ah, those were the days. Young, blissfully unaware that no 28-year-old woman would suddenly take an interest in a 12-year-old boy simply because of how cool he was looking in his role as Jack Sparrow in an amateur reproduction of the Battle of Calypso’s Maelstrom from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
Winsome- sweetly or innocently charming, pleasing
Ex: The homeless man’s toothless grin was not a winsome one. Although, there is something to be said about the amount of gums being shown equating roughly to the amount of cash I’m willing to donate. If a homeless guy is sporting a full set of pearly white veneers I’m probably just going to give him some change of the copper variety.
Wily- cunning; using tricks or deceit to gain an advantage
Ex: In the most recent installment in the series the always wily Wile E. Coyote painted a collapsed Philadelphia interstate in order to get the Roadrunner to take backroads on his commute to Wilmington. This didn’t have the same emphatic pop as the old fake painted tunnel gag.
I’m on your side with the tooth to gum ratio for sure.
