Cull- to pick from a larger group

Ex: Pierre culled the nicest pears from the thousands that glided past him on the conveyor belt. On the Harry and David factory floor hundreds of employees just like Pierre were performing identical sorting tasks with various fruits, chocolates, cured meats, and popcorns. The explicit instruction given to them by Harry and David themselves was to only select the finest quality produce and snacks for placement in their luxury gift baskets. The task was straightforward in nature, but the pressure placed on employees was immense thanks to the consequences of say, selecting a blemished apple off of the belt. In his short time with the company, Pierre had already seen one of his coworkers make an error in judgement that cost him his job, and, potentially, much, much more. Rodrigo, a portly Bolivian transplant who manned the tangelo station, once yanked a fruit off the belt that lacked its distinct reddish-orange hue. Before he could even think about his mistake, the floor opened up from underneath him and he was sucked down a massive aluminum tube that led deep into the bowels of the factory. Pierre had never seen or heard from Rodrigo again. These were the stakes at Harry and David. Harry and David knew what it took to become the premier name in the gift basket space, and they weren’t about to let a few careless migrant workers stand in the way of their vision.
